Maritime Learning, Streamlined: Malaysian Maritime Academy’s Moodle™ Journey
Set against the backdrop of Kuala Sungai Baru in scenic Melaka, the Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn Bhd (also known as ALAM) is a leading institution dedicated to developing Malaysia’s future maritime leaders. With a proud legacy of equipping cadets and marine professionals with world-class training, the Academy has always prioritised practical instruction grounded in strong academic foundations. But as educational demands evolved and digital transformation became a necessity rather than a luxury, the Academy knew it was time to bring their learning ecosystem up to speed.
Getting Their Sea Legs with a Learning Management System
Of course, running a maritime academy isn’t quite the same as running a standard college or university. Training future captains of industry (literally) requires a blend of simulation, theory, and hands-on on-deck experience. That created unique challenges for the academy’s training and educational delivery — especially when trying to scale or extend learning beyond physical classrooms and simulator labs.
Before engaging with us at Pukunui, their learning environment was patchwork at best. Some instructors used email to distribute PDFs and assignments. Others switched between USB drives, cloud storage links, and stacks of printed materials. Not exactly shipshape, especially for a future-focused academy. The Academy needed a smarter, centralised way to deliver, manage, and track online learning. This is where Moodle™ software came in — and where we came in as implementation and support specialists.
Charting the Course with Pukunui’s Support
We started simply. In the first year, ALAM came onboard with our hosting plan. This was more than enough to get their crew trained and their digital classroom launched smoothly. We handled everything from the technical side of setting up their Moodle™ platform under their own custom URL to configuring secure user access. We also provided basic branding to match their institutional identity. It was their first voyage into a cloud-based learning management system — and we made sure they had a solid hull beneath them.
Once the waters were tested and their team gained confidence, it was time to scale. Within a year, the Academy had grown from a small-scale user base into a thriving Moodle community.
We didn’t stop at hosting either. We facilitated the migration of an existing Moodle™ platform into our managed cloud system, upgraded its software safely (always a delicate manoeuvre when third-party plugins are involved), and installed remote backup protocols to protect their content. Let’s be honest — nobody wants to lose a semester’s worth of cadet training materials over a faulty hard drive.
Why Moodle™ Works in Maritime Training
Maritime academies face special challenges. Course content doesn’t follow the traditional “chalk and talk” model. There’s practical seamanship, safety protocols, marine engineering fundamentals, navigation training… and more acronyms than a naval manual. That’s where Moodle™ software excels.
This open-source platform allows for modular, customised content delivery — perfect for complex training pathways. Each course within the Moodle™ system could be configured to reflect real competencies, with students working through asynchronous training, simulations, and assessments at sea or on land. It also ensured their training progress was trackable, verifiable, and secure.
Onboarding Training
We also supplied two onboarding training sessions at no cost, ensuring their administrative and teaching crews weren’t left adrift trying to figure out course creation or plugin settings. We know that a digital solution is only as good as the people using it — so we make it a point to train those users well.
Expanding to Scholarly Publishing
As the Academy continued to modernise, they also took a step into academic publishing. We bundled in support for an Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform — a move that allows them to produce official journals and research outputs tied to maritime studies and innovations.
What’s Ahead on the Horizon
After many years of partnership — and a few learning curves along the way — Malaysian Maritime Academy now operates a scalable, secure, and highly functional Moodle™ platform tailored to their unique needs. Their educators are empowered, their students more engaged, and their tech stack far more seaworthy than before. Oh, and no more USB drives passed around in manila envelopes.
We’ve loved partnering with such an inspiring institution. Their commitment to forward-thinking, high-quality maritime education made this journey both incredibly meaningful — and pretty smooth-sailing too.
