Modernising Online Learning for the Real Estate Institute of Victoria
The Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV), based in Camberwell, Victoria, has long played an integral role in shaping real estate standards and training across the state. With more than 80 years of history behind it, REIV offers industry-leading education programs, professional development, and compliance training for property professionals at all levels.
But even the most established institutions can benefit from a tech refresh.
REIV’s digital learning environment needed a facelift — not only for visual polish but to better reflect their brand and support a more dynamic, user-friendly learning experience. Their training team was also keen to streamline assessment workflows and provide students with a more seamless path through course materials.
The Challenge: Outdated User Experience and Manual Processes
REIV had already implemented the Moodle™ software platform to deliver their training courses, but over time, their instance had started to show its age. The design was functional but didn’t reflect the professionalism of REIV’s brand. Navigation wasn’t as intuitive as it could have been, and some course layouts felt flat and uninspiring.
On top of that, assessments were managed with processes that required manual intervention — assessors still had to export, import, download, and email files. For an organisation that prides itself on staying ahead of compliance and legislative trends, this was beginning to feel too much like working in the past.
What Pukunui Delivered: From Layout to Assessments
The REIV team partnered with Pukunui for a tailored engagement across three key pillars: content optimisation, theme design, and training. Here’s what we rolled out:
- Course Layout Refresh: We started by focusing on one of their existing courses. Using the current content, we redesigned the layout within the Moodle™ software environment to make it more visually engaging and easier to navigate. Think clear calls to action, upgraded dashboards, and the kind of traffic flow that makes sense to the learner (and secretly pleases the admin team).
- Content and Archiving: We archived the remaining older courses, helping declutter the learning management system and create room for future builds — kind of like spring cleaning, but with more metadata.
- Online Assessments: One of our main goals was to shift the assessments away from manual handling into a fully online environment. Pukunui built out initial trackable, electronically submitted assessments that allowed students to complete and submit their tasks within the Moodle™ software environment. Assessors, in turn, gained the ability to mark directly online — cutting out file transfers and saving hours of admin time.
- Custom Theme Design: Using a third-party base theme, we customised the design to match the REIV’s brand aesthetics — working within the technical constraints of the Moodle™ project while staying true to the institute’s professional presentation. With updated navigation and layout elements, REIV’s online campus now feels consistent with their public-facing website and values.
- Training and Consultancy: Finally, we provided a two-hour remote workshop via video conferencing tools. It was a mix of hands-on guidance, Q&A, and general consultancy, giving REIV’s internal team the functional knowledge to maintain and build on the updates going forward.
Why an LMS Matters in the Real Estate Sector
The real estate industry in Victoria is deeply regulated, and professionals must routinely upskill to stay compliant. A structured Learning Management System aligned with national compliance frameworks isn’t just helpful — it’s absolutely essential.
When course delivery lives in a reliable, trackable, and beautifully branded software environment like the Moodle™ project, students are more likely to engage and complete on time. Trainers and assessors spend less time chasing files and more time doing what they were hired to do — teach and support learners.
For organisations such as REIV, a streamlined LMS isn’t just a technical upgrade — it directly supports their ability to deliver professional education at scale while maintaining trust with members.
Outcomes You Can See (and Use)
Following the project rollout, REIV now has:
- A refreshed LMS interface that reflects their brand
- Optimised course layouts that are easier for students to navigate
- Assessments built for online completion and marking
- Archived outdated content, clearing the road for clean analytics and course builds
- Staff training that empowers their team to manage future edits themselves
Users get in, do what they need to do, and get out — no confusion, no email tag. The feedback from assessors in particular has been positive: marking workflows are now quicker, more consistent, and (dare we say) actually satisfying to use.
If smooth assessment workflows ever become an Olympic sport, REIV is definitely podium-bound.
Looking Ahead
This project planted the seeds for longer-term scalability. With a consistent, navigable theme and cleaner LMS architecture, the team at REIV can confidently expand their course catalogue and manage updates without spiraling into tech debt. Their internal training means they’re already off to a strong start.
It’s always a pleasure working with organisations that care deeply about learner experience and education standards. REIV’s team brought clarity, collaboration, and a clear vision from day one — which makes our job that much more fun (and fulfilling).
