How University of Cyberjaya Navigated Digital Learning with Pukunui Sdn Bhd

The University of Cyberjaya (UoC), nestled in the heart of Malaysia’s tech capital, is known for its focus on healthcare and medical education through institutions such as AMU, AMC, and CUCMS. It caters to thousands of learners with diverse academic needs—ranging from clinical disciplines to wellness-focused programs. In recent years, as their digital learning needs evolved, UoC recognised that their existing infrastructure needed a serious upgrade. Enter Pukunui.

Teaching at Scale Needed Tools with Reach

Managing online education for a multi-campus university system is not for the faint of bandwidth. UoC needed an integrated solution to serve students across three major campuses, along with the backend reliability to support concurrent users, course administration, and secure access to learning materials. Throw in the need for scalability and you’re looking at a cocktail of technical complexity that could give even seasoned IT managers a minor heart palpitation.

On top of everything, the university required a centralised learning platform that could unify their digital education delivery. This meant customisation without giving up oversight. And it had to all work seamlessly. Piece of cake, right?

The Pukunui Approach

From 2016 onwards, Pukunui and University of Cyberjaya’s teams rolled up their sleeves and got to work. The journey started with basic Moodle™ platform training—an essential step for administrators and course creators. But this wasn’t just a fire-and-forget training. We provided a roadmap that included hands-on training sessions followed by ongoing support to make sure no one was left guessing after the initial rollout.

With a solid foundation in place, we began expanding the digital ecosystem:

  • Multiple branded Moodle™ software sites for AMU and AMC, each with shared storage and bandwidth planning to reflect their real-world learner numbers.
  • Centralised hosting and technical support that ran from 2017 through to the current year, updated annually to meet changing usage needs.
  • Robust daily backup and recovery setups —just in case someone out there accidentally deleted a semester’s worth of quiz results. (It happens more than you’d think.)
  • Micromanaged storage expansion plans tailored to actual usage data, with bursts of additional storage added as needed. This avoided overbuying capacity that students might never use, while ensuring consistent uptime during peak use.
  • A unified theme and branding strategy using custom themes that preserved each institution’s identity while giving students a coherent user experience across platforms.

To keep virtual teaching smooth, Microsoft Teams was integrated across the Moodle™ platforms, providing a quick and effective way to bring live lectures to students learning remotely.

Why a Learning Platform Matters for Modern Universities

Universities aren’t just brick-and-mortar lecture halls anymore. For institutions like UoC, a virtual campus isn’t a luxury—it’s mandatory. A Moodle™ software implementation allows for flexible delivery, centralised oversight, and accessibility from anywhere, especially critical in a post-pandemic landscape where hybrid learning is here to stay.

Managing thousands of students means balancing control and autonomy. A properly configured and hosted Moodle™ platform enables each school to tailor their courses, while shared hosting and support mean reduced operating costs and fewer headaches. (Plus, a lot less coffee needed for server room emergencies.)

Tangible Outcomes That Made a Difference

The setup Pukunui provided allowed UoC’s administrators to manage the LMS system with ease. With site-wide backups, dependable security, user authentication via Microsoft O365, and scalable storage solutions, they didn’t just build a learning environment—they designed an experience.

UoC’s team was proactive, positive, and always ready to collaborate—a pleasure to work with from day one.

Still Collaborating, Still Growing

Pukunui and University of Cyberjaya’s partnership continues today, with ongoing support, hosting renewals, and check-ins to ensure everything runs like a well-coded machine. As new academic years approach and enrolment evolves, Pukunui remains ready with server upgrades, storage tweaks, plugin updates, and good old-fashioned advice to keep the platform humming.
